Gladbach vs Borussia Dortmund: Preview, Team News, Likely Lineups, And Prediction
Can Hecking’s men stop high flying Dortmund side from yet another victory at Borussia Park?
Five times champions Borussia Monchengladbach will host eight times champions Borussia Dortmund in a Bundesliga clash on Sunday.
After beating Atlanta 3-2 in Europa League, the in-form Dortmund side will travel to face Gladbach on Matchday 23 of Bundesliga.
Dortmund are unbeaten in last seven games in Bundesliga winning five of them. They are favorites to win heading into the game.
Marco Reus return to football after 259 days of injury and is set to face his former side. He joined Gladbach in 2009 from Rot Weiss Ahlen. Over the course of three seasons, he notched up 41 goals and 28 assists in 109 appearances in all competitions earning him a move back to his hometown club in the summer of 2012.
With five goals in his name against his former side, Monchengladbach’s fan will not be pleased with the return of Marco Reus in the Dortmund team. Meanwhile, Matthias Ginter is set to face his former side Dortmund following his summer move of £15.3 million.
In last five meetings between the club, Dortmund have won all scoring 20 goals. In the previous fixture, Borussia Dortmund trashed Monchengladbach 6-1 at Singal Iduna Park with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring a brilliant hat-trick.
Borussia Monchengladbach will be pleased to know that Aubameyang is no longer involved with the club.
Apart from Reus, Monchengladbach will have to stop Michy Batshuayi if they are to win this game. Following his loan move from Chelsea in January, Batshuayi has scored five goals in 3 matches for Dortmund proving to be a perfect replacement for Aubameyang.
Borussia Monchengladbach have lost their last three games without scoring any goals so it will be a challenge for Dieter Hecking to change this around. They are only other team along with Mainz to have lost four of their five Bundesliga outings in 2018 and slipped to the tenth position in the table.
Gladbach have 31 points with just 3 points behind sixth-place Schalke 04 so a win will increase their chances of playing Europe next season. They have to show excellent team effort and coordination if they are to beat Dortmund and earn a deserved three points.
Goal Keeper Yann Sommer and striker Raffael is expected to return in the starting XI. Johnson (back), Wendt (thigh), Villalba (thigh), Traore (thigh), Strobl (knee) and Doucoure (thigh) will miss the match for Monchengladbach.
Club captain Marcel Schmelzer will look to return to his side after recovering from a calf injury. Chelsea Loanee Michy Batshuayi again scored twice in a 3-2 victory over Atalanta in Europa League. He has now scored five goals in three appearances for Dortmund, so he is expected to lead the attack line for Dortmund.
Mario Gotze provided two assists after coming from the bench; so he could be seen in the starting XI. Sancho(ankle), Raphael Guerreiro (muscular), Durm (ankle) and Yarmolenko (tendon) and Kagawa (ankle) are not available for the clash.
Players To Watch
Brother of Eden Hazard, Thorgan has already marked his name in international football. Having already representing Belgium in the international stage, Thorgan is expected to lead the front line for Monchengladbach’s side. He has scored seven times and provided four assists in 22 games for Monchengladbach this season so he will be the player to watch.
Following his move in summer to Monchengladbach, he has scored four times and provided two assists in 19 appearances for Monchengladbach this season. He can upset his former side with his performance.
Scoring 5 goals in 3 matches for Dortmund, Michy Batshuayi will look to continue his form against Monchengladbach. Following his loan move from Chelsea in January, he has been in sublime form, and he seems to be the best transfer of this January.
Mario Gotze didn’t start in the teams 3-2 win over Atalanta in Europa League but made a significant impact in the match providing two assists after coming from the bench. He is expected to start this game and will be a headache for the opposition if he plays at his highest level.
