Runaway La Liga champions Barcelona host mid-table Getafe in the matchday 23 game of La Liga 2017/2018 season. Barcelona sit comfortably at the top of the table and Getafe are gunning for a top half of the table finish.
Barcelona come into the match having secured a spot in the final of the Copa Del Rey and will face off against Sevilla in the competition’s finale. The Blaugrana have won the competition twenty-nine times in their history, the most since the competition was founded in 1903.
The Catalans got through to the finals with a comfortable victory over Valencia in the semifinals, winning the tie 3-0 on aggregate. The highlight of the second leg win was the goal for Coutinho, the first in a Barcelona shirt. Ivan Rakitic extended their lead in the eighty-second minute and eliminated Valencia from the tournament.
Barcelona haven’t lost a single league game this season but were very close to end that record last weekend against Espanyol. Gerard Pique’s equalizer in the later stages of the match secured a point for the club.
The Catalans will undoubtedly lift the Spanish La Liga title this season which will be their twenty-fifth league title and their sixth wince 2009. Barca are nine points ahead of Atletico Madrid and could extend that gap to twelve with a win that is if Atleti lose.
Messi and co. have scored sixty goals already in this season’s Liga Santander and has let in only eleven which means that Ernesto Valverde’s men have the best attack and the second-best defense in the league.
Newly promoted Getafe shared a point each in their clash against Leganes last week. The game had only two shots on target and both times were from a Getafe attack. The game ended 0-0 but did have 37 fouls awarded in total.
Getafe only has the league to focus on, and Jose Bordalas, the manager of El Geta, has his eyes firmly fixed on the top half of the table finish. The club has been up and down the division in recent years and with survival looking sure, they will want to build upon a strong season.
Getafe currently occupy the eleventh position in the league table in a congested mid-table. They have twenty-nine points, only four points away from top 6 positions. A win at the Camp Nou will bolster their chances of at-least reaching the Europa League.
Barcelona have the best home record in the league this season only failing to get all three points in one occasion. They are unbeaten in 10 home games while Getafe have struggled on the road. They only have one away win which was against Leganes earlier this season.
Ousmane Dembele and Thomas Vermaelen are still out because of muscular problems that have kept them out of action for 17 matches between them. Both are expected to return within the month of February.
Gerard Pique is said to be doubtful for the match with Lucas Digne also sideline because of a finger injury.
Right winger Alvaro Jimenez has been sidelined due to an unknown injury and has missed four games because of it.
Defensive midfielder Markel Bergara has a metatarsal fracture and might not feature soon for the club.
Angel Luis Rodriguez is their top scorer with eight goals in the league and Jorge Molina has chipped in with five more.
