CSKA Moscow vs Benfica: Match Preview, Team News, Predicted Lineups, and Prediction
Portuguese champions Benfica are in Moscow for the Champions League fifth group stage match against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. Rui Vitória’s side are on the bottom of the group A, losing all four matches. Whereas, CSKA Moscow are currently in the third position with six points.
It’s an important match for the home side as they are level in terms of points with Basel. Manchester United top the group with the 100% record and are already qualified for the next round. Basel are currently second on the table having superior head to head record.
If CSKA Moscow manages to win at home this Wednesday, that would be a big step towards the next round knowing that Manchester United will play Swiss side later on the same day. So it’s equally important game for CSKA Moscow as their last group match against Manchester United.
Benfica’s hope for qualifying for the next round is only marginally alive. They have to win both games against CSKA Moscow and Basel with a big margin. Also, hoping that Basel and CSKA Moscow both will lose against Manchester United.
Basel humiliated the Portuguese side in the second game of the group by 5-0. So it is the almost impossible task for Benfica to go through the group stage from the current situation.
Brazilian right-back Mario Fernandes might miss the game on Wednesday due to injury. He was not in the squad for CSKA Moscow in the 4-2 away victory against SKA-Khabarovsk in the Russian Premier League. So CSKA Moscow manager Viktor Goncharenko might start with the same lineup as last Saturday.
Defender Luisao is back to face the Russian side after suspension. He was shown the second yellow card in the injury time against Manchester United for the rough tackle on Scott McTominay. Portuguese right-back André Almeida also came out of suspension after he was sent off in Basel.
CSKA Moscow (3-5-2)
Berezutski (CB)- Vasin (CB) – A. Berezutski (CB)
Gordyushenko (RWB) – Dzagoev (CM)- Natcho (DM)- Golovin (CM) – Shchennikov (LWB)

Almeida (RB)- Luisao (CB)- Dias (CB)- Grimaldo (LB)
Pizzi ( RM)- Fejsa (CM) – Krovinovic (LM)

Viktor Goncharenko’s side defeated the Portuguese powerhouse in their own backyards on the first matchday of the group stage.
But the Russian side is yet to win a point at home in the Champions League. Knowing it’s an important fixture to get through the group stage, Moscow side will be giving everything to win all the three points.
Our Prediction: CKSA Moscow 2-0 Benfica
